International Womens Day

How did you get into design?
Can you tell us about your past experience?

My parents ran a clothing manufacturing and retail business with over 40 stores and distribution into David Jones and Myer, so you could say "it's in my blood". After university, I worked in the family business and then had an opportunity to live in Milan, where I worked for Prada for 3 years. On my return to Australia, I worked for Country Road in design and product development and soon after I wanted to start my own business in fashion.

Are there specific women who inspire you and why?

My mum was an amazing role model who definitely was able to not only be a successful business person but was also able to balance family and friends, travelling and enjoying the journey. I really did always dream of being able to one day provide in that same way for my family. Her impeccable style also inspired my love of fashion and quality.

How do you juggle motherhood and running a company?

I always remember to make time for family. We have meals together and when the kids were young, I always brought them with me on my travels. I took my daughter Allegra to China with me when she was 3 months old and the kids always came along for the interstate trade fairs. Family is very important to me and I don't think it should be a choice, you can enjoy both. In fact, being a mother inspires and motivates me to continue to grow my business.

What has been the highlight of your Gingerlilly journey so far?

During my first trade fair in 2007, we were absolutely swamped and couldn't keep up with the crowds of people at our stand waiting to place a wholesale order. Having a business background, I had the stock on hand to fulfill the orders however I still didn't have an office, only a warehouse to store the pjs. It was very exciting to have to quickly employ staff and move into a new space.

What are the best parts of your job?

I love the design and product development aspects. I do it with ease and it gives me a real buzz. I also love shoot days, they are always such an enjoyable day and I am inspired by the team of talented women who make it happen and look amazing while doing it!

What is Gingerlilly's main point of difference compared to other brands on the market?

Quality and value without a doubt. Fit is another thing we pride ourselves on and our experience in the clothing industry sets us apart for sure. Supplier relationships is another thing that sets us apart, brands that are newer to the market may be able to filtrate the digital space well but Gingerlilly has the supply chain which has been established and nurtured for many years.

Where did the name 'Gingerlilly' come from?

We looked for a name that incorporated a little spice (trend) and sweetness (sophistication and classic style), which is reflective of the garments and brand vison.

What advice do you have for women looking to grow either their own business or within the company they work for?

Make sure you are doing what you love and the rest will come. Don't chase the quick wins and stay true to your goals and vision for your brand and/or career. Listen to people and work as a team because you always have something to learn.

What advice would you give to young women in the fashion industry?

Get a mentor or go and work for a large successful brand before you consider launching a start up. Really educate yourself on the supply chain and how to build your creativity into a business. It's a tough industry, it's ever changing and fast paced. You need to be strong and ride the ups and downs.
